ANC-EFF Coalition leave Kempton Park Residents to the mercy of cable thieves

The ANC-EFF coalition in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has left residents in Kempton Park X2–4 at the mercy of cable thieves.

During December 2024 and for most of January 2025, power outages — often lasting many hours, if not days, have been the order of the day due to theft and vandalism of electrical infrastructure.

We have submitted a series of questions to both the MMC of Community Safety and the MMC of Electricity to ascertain what plans both these departments have to secure the energy network and root out crime.

Not only has this disrupted daily life but has negatively impacted the finances of residents who have had to discard perishable food items on multiple occasions.

The absence of timeous and clear communication from the Kempton Park Electricity Department has added insult to injury as timelines for restoration are seldom provided.

It is imperative that the Electricity Department devise and implement a comprehensive strategy aimed at protecting electrical infrastructure in Kempton Park X2–4.

Given the urgency of the situation, it is essential for both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to collaborate with the community to apprehend those behind this theft. Together, they must fulfil their constitutional mandate to ensure the safety and security of all residents.

We will continue to advocate for improved municipal responsiveness and effectiveness, working tirelessly to ensure that the needs of the community are met with the urgency and attention they deserve.
