The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) notes with serious concern the appointment of the new Member Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Energy, Cllr Mzayifane Ngwenya, the embattled Ward 101 councillor.
Not long ago, the Public Participation and Petitions Standing Committee (PPPSC) dealt with three petitions in one meeting where residents of Ward 101 raised issues with their councillor.
Among some of the issues raised by resident against the MMC is that Cllr Ngwenya is unavailable to the residents. He also excludes them to take part in the affairs of the municipality. One wonders why the new mayor has appointed someone who is clearly a liability to the residents of Ekurhuleni to such a critical portfolio.
His absence from the residents who directly elected him is already a serious concern, now the mayor wants to give him a ticket to stay further away from accounting to the residents who elected him.
Clearly, the ANC believes in subjecting the residents of the city to political office bearers who have failed as ward councillors. Instead of rewarding the incompetent councillor who is a liability to the residents with an MMC position, the Executive Mayor, Ald Nkosindiphile Xhakaza should rectify his mistake and remove him from his portfolio immediately.
Even better, the ANC must remove Cllr Ngwenya as a councillor so that a DA councillor can take over Ward 101 and show residents what it is like to be represented by a responsive public representative.
The DA will not standby while the ANC and EFF marriage continues to put the interests of their pockets ahead of the needs of the residents
