Release: Immediate

Type: Media Statement

Once again, Bonaero Park and large areas of Pomona were left without electricity during the past weekend with unexplained power outages lasting 19 hours at a time. These incessant power outages experienced by the Kempton Park community are causing massive disruptions for residents and businesses alike.

The power unexpectedly went off on Friday, the 30th of July, at 06h45 in the morning. While some parts of Bonaero Park were restored almost five hours later, the rest were only restored at 02h00 the next day — 19 hours later!

Residents and the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni are growing increasingly concerned by the lack of meaningful communication or feedback from the delegated officials and the Energy Department. Moreover, information with regards to the cause of the outage and turnaround times was not provided to Councillors and residents. When information was provided, it was done so begrudgingly because of the DA Councillor’s persistence.

The DA Councillor spent the entire day requesting feedback from the Energy Department. This is the feedback that was given:

09h50 — Kindly note that the CoE is aware of the area power outage in Bonaero Park & Parts of Pomona, our officials are investigating.
15h26 — Kindly note that the officials are still onsite attempting to locate the cable fault. An update of the restoration time will be shared when the fault is located.
18h02 — Kindly note that the CoE is aware of the area power outage in Bonaero Park & Parts of Pomona. Restoration time 00h00. Efforts will be made to restore power sooner.

Power was eventually restored at 02h00, two hours later than the communicated restoration time.

It is unacceptable that Ekurhuleni residents are forced to endure recurring power outages. Additionally, power outages take prolonged periods to get resolved, without any meaningful communication from the City, further aggravating the issue.

The DA in Ekurhuleni is appalled by the ANC Coalition’s* inability to manage the power supply in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE). The residents of Ekurhuleni deserve better!
