Following an article published by the Alberton RECORD’s front page on Wednesday, 27 January, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni saw it fit to investigate the full extent of what had transpired in the Brackenhurst Clinic.
During a meeting, which took place on 4 February with clinic officials; the DA learned that as per the clinic’s procedure, frail and elderly patients are afforded an opportunity to the front of the line. This is done to assist the elderly and frail patients, spend as little waiting time as possible for assistance at the clinic.
It was during this meeting the DA learned that the patient in question was a patient who visited Brackenhurst Clinic because Alberton Clinic was closed due to a Covid-19 case.
The DA finds it unfortunate that the resident who complained about the issue of alleged bad service failed to speak to the staff at the clinic to be given the necessary assistance.
The DA also received a letter from a resident who visits the Brackenhurst Clinic regularly which confirms, that besides challenges faced by healthcare professionals during Covid-19, the clinic continues to be one of a shining light in the community.
While the issue of patients forced to stand outside in the queue was raised to the clinic, with the suggestion of more chairs be added to assist, it was made clear that the option would not be viable. The reason provided was that there are concerns that the chairs could be stolen, something which has occured in the past.
The DA is pleased to see the dedication of healthcare workers during Covid-19 pandemic. Their dedication extends beyond the fight against Covid-19. With HIV on the rise, the healthcare workers desire to continue their programs of educating communities on HIV and diabetes, as these often affect residents of Brackenhurst and Brackendowns the most.
Furthermore, the DA has learned that residents from outside the clinic’s service area are flocking to the DA-led Ward 38 for healthcare services, because of the dedication of the staff at the Brackenhurst Clinic.
With this in mind, the DA would like to implore the ANC-led coalition City of Ekurhuleni government to be on the forefront of helping clinics in the city, by ensuring that they are properly capacitated and the funded vacancies filled.
Any sphere of government must prioritise on the efficient functioning of healthcare facilities as they play a critical role in providing a quality of life among residents.
A DA-led Ekurhuleni would prioritise a well-resourced healthcare system which provides a beacon of hope for the residents of the city! It is time for Real Hope and Real Change, Now!
