Sinkhole on Springs and Colliery Road, Brakpan

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is concerned over the widening of a sinkhole on the corner of Springs Road and Colliery Road in Brakpan.

The massive sinkhole has formed on the side of the road and is fast filling up with water due to the constant flow of water, caused by a leaking Rand Water pipe.

Aside from the safety hazard posed by the sinkhole to pedestrians and motorists, who use the road as a main route between Brakpan and Spings, the leaking pipe is causing massive wastage of fresh drinking water.

While the leaking pipe has been reported to the Department of Water, Sanitation and Energy, Rand Water has yet to action any repair work. Subsequently the Department of Roads and Stormwater have noted that they will only be able to repair the sinkhole once the pipe is repaired.

In the meantime, the DA has requested that the Department of Roads and Stormwater place hazard signs and barriers to safeguard pedestrians and motorists from the sinkhole.

The DA will continue to put pressure on the Department of Water, Sanitations and Energy to get Rand Water to fix the leak as a matter of urgency as the sinkhole is an accident waiting to happen. The Party also calls on the City Manager, Dr. Imogen Mashazi, to insist on turnaround times from Rand Water to ensure that these problems are dealt with efficiently and effectively.
