The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is appalled by the way city departments under the leadership of the ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition ignore the pleas of residents who have submitted petitions to address critical service delivery issues in their communities.

The first quarter report for the current financial year, 2024/25, revealed that of the 79 petitions received, only 11 petitions were concluded and resolved.

Top under-performers include the departments of Human Settlement, Roads, and Energy — these departments are the root cause of most discontent in Ekurhuleni.

Failure within these departments are detrimental to the city and its residents. What has become evident is that the ANC-EFF coalition is running the city into the ground.

This failure is not limited to departments in the city.

The Office of the Speaker under the leadership of the EFF has also blatantly turned a blind eye to the plight of residents by ignoring petitions. As the custodian of council, the Speaker’s office should lead by example.

We will continue to make use of our representation on the Public Participation and Petitions Committee, to fight for residents and hold this underwhelming ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition to account.
