The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni notes the recent announcement by Executive Mayor, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, that progress is being made regarding the establishment of a University of Science and Innovation in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).
Discussions around this proposed University have been in the works for nearly a decade, and it is encouraging that there finally seems to be some tangible progress.
Mayor Xhakaza indicated that the steering committee comprised of representatives from the CoE and the Department of Higher Education have identified the old Cinderella Prison and other surrounding properties in Boksburg as the site for the University.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the construction of institutions of Higher Education, specifically those geared towards much needed skills, which will improve the economic prospects of our residents — particularly our young residents.
It is important that the development of this University is conducted in a transparent and inclusive manner.
South Africa has borne witness to numerous scandals where mega-projects such as this are concerned.
Ekurhuleni is no stranger to failed mega-projects and millions of wasted Rands.
While not the implementing agent of the project, the CoE has a major role to play in ensuring bulk infrastructure, transport and roads and human settlement planning is taken into consideration to cope with the inevitable change to the dynamics of not only the immediate surrounds of the site, but to the greater geographical location.
The DA will closely monitor this project to ensure that the City of Ekurhuleni, and other spheres of government complete this project within budget and on time.
