The Democratic Alliance in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is shocked by the ANC and its coalition partners* decision to suddenly Tender the Pound Services, which is mandated to be rendered by the municipality, as prescribed in our Constitution.
The SPCA has been running this service for years, with no real funding allocated by the ANC-led municipality.
Earlier this year, we highlighted the appalling amount the City has allocated to the SPCA through grants.
Sadly, if the Municipality continues with the Tender process, many SPCA employees could lose their jobs, and drastically affect the vital services rendered by the SPCA, including the crucial animal care services in informal settlements. The SPCA has already been hard hit due to the COVID pandemic which has seen household surrendering their pets as they struggle to care for them.
The City needs to reprioritise and place animal care higher on its agenda.
As the DA, we will continue to hold the failing ANC and its coalition partners to account. Poor planning cannot be allowed to become the norm at the expense of social responsibility.
Coalition Partners: African Independent Congress (AIC), Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Independent Ratepayers Association of South Africa (IRASA)
