Criminal activity cannot be allowed to continue tearing apart the fabric of communities
Note to Editors: This is a letter by Cllr. Precious Jacobs, DA City of Ekurhuleni PR Councillor, assigned to Kwa-Thema.
Date: 19 February 2025
Daily, Kwa-Thema residents fall victim to crime.
Criminal activity cannot be allowed to continue to tear apart the fabric of communities and poison the local community’s psyche.
The web of terror that crime throws over Kwa-Thema is so strong, and far-reaching, that every resident has been constrained by it in some way.
The lives of many talented and committed residents have been lost.
Last week the life of an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Officer was taken.
Just this week, another man was shot dead in the area.
Many of us have been deeply traumatized.
We have become suspicious of our fellow brothers and sisters and distrusting of the institutions that are supposed to keep us safe.
The DA’s vision of an Open Opportunity Society for All, is one where children are safe from harm and residents can walk freely without fear.
Criminals are caught promptly and prosecuted speedily, while victims of crime receive the appropriate support and are treated with compassion.
People are respectful of the law and understand the consequences of violating it.
Communities are confident that due process will be followed and those prosecuted will face the might of the law.
We call on both law enforcement and judicial services to step up to the plate and play their part in protecting our residents who we so dearly love.
