The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni strongly condemned the violence and looting that occurred last week, however, we recognise the plight and challenges this has brought to communities affected by the wide-scale looting.
It is for this reason, we undertook a food drive to deliver food and essentials to affected communities. Partnering with local businesses and communities, Spar Bedfordview became the hub for donations from local communities. Together with partners, we sought to collect essentials, which were distributed to areas affected by the looting, including those areas hardest hit, like Pietermaritzburg and neighbouring areas.
At a time that will forever be remembered in South Africa’s history as a low point, we, as the DA, are proud to work towards change, by coming together with communities to rebuild and illustrate the true South African spirit.
The strong sense of togetherness to overcome this low point is what the DA strive for. DA Ward councillor, Cllr Jill Humphreys, embarked on the project, together with the DA Germiston Constituency, and through community and business donations, we were able to collect a container worth of food and essentials. We are grateful and excited to have watched this contribution grow — one shopping bag at a time! We were aware of the need for our Bedfordview community to be able to contribute. Everyone wanted to be able to help — and with this scheme, everyone could.
The mass looting and destruction of properties will have a serious effect on employment and our already fragile economy, which has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic. But despite this, the social need to come together and assist is greater than ever. As the DA, we will continue working with our communities and businesses to improve lives and build business confidence.
With the help of businesses and organisations, we have partnered to continue this vital initiative. We will be assisting more communities affected by the looting and will be ramping up our efforts across Ekurhuleni to collect more essentials for communities in need.
Our current truck carrying staple foods and non-perishable essentials will go to NGOs, animal shelters orphanages and retirement homes that have been hardest hit by the looting and criminality which took place, last week.
A vote for the DA in the upcoming local government election will be a vote for change. We wish to thank everyone who came together and donated. We look forward to working closely with businesses and organisations to help struggling communities through this difficult period. We believe in a better South Africa and are working towards it every day.
