Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni is demanding that security measures be put in place to stop the theft of power cables between Farrarmere and Lakefield.

This comes after the local CPF patrolling the area managed to secure and prevent the theft and vandalism of the cable on 6 July 2023.

It has come to the DA’s attention that the contracted security protection service allegedly only has one vehicle to use between Daveyton, Etwatwa and Benoni. This leaves the infrastructure vulnerable to thieves.

Another primary concern is the depth at which the cable is buried. This urgently needs to be addressed. Under a DA government, we had discussions to establish a multi-disciplinary task team to protect our infrastructure.

We are calling on the EFF-led coalition to take the people of Ekurhuleni and our infrastructure seriously and put measures in place to protect it. We cannot allow criminals to damage, vandalise and steal the city’s resources.
