Date: 11 February 2022

Release: Immediate

Type: Media Statement

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is shocked at the sad and senseless killing of assistant nurse, Lebo Monene, at her place of work, the Tembisa Hospital, on the 9th of February 2022.

The victim was allegedly shot dead by her boyfriend, who then turned the gun on himself. He survived and was stabilised and admitted to the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

Nothing can justify this senseless killing and is yet another devastating case of gender-based violence (GBV) that continues to grip our communities.

Monene worked at the Maskhane Section of the hospital, which almost exclusively treats victims of GBV. As such, she had dedicated her career to helping those who had sadly succumbed to similar crimes that led to her demise.

The DA calls on the police, civil society and regular citizens to unite against the scourge of GBV in Ekurhuleni. In addition, the Party sends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.

Cllr. Selby Thekiso

DA Councilor in Ward 89, Ekurhuleni
