Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The Democratic Alliance in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) sends its condolences to the family and loved ones of the motorcyclist who passed away in the fatal accident which occurred on the R21.

The four-vehicle accident which occurred on the 23rd of October saw two councillors involved in the multi-vehicle accident, one being the MMC for Finance, EPMO and ICT, Cllr Nkululeko Dunga. While we wish both councillors a speedy recovery, the DA is concerned of the allegations that MMC Dunga was being transported by an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) VIP Protector in his private vehicle. We will be writing to the Chief of Police to provide us with the information on who permitted the VIP Protector to do this.

It is also alleged that the private vehicle involved in the accident was fitted with blue lights and impounded to the City’s storage. We will be seeking clarity on this matter and we will be taking the necessary action should ‘special favours’ have been granted to MMC Dunga.

Accidents are unfortunate incidents and given that a person lost their life, it is crucial that this matter be investigated to the fullest extent, and should any wrongdoing be found that those individuals involved face the full might of the law, regardless of their political might.

The DA will be writing to the Executive Mayor as well as the Chief of Police requesting a comprehensive report on this matter.
