Date: 19 September 2024
Release: Immediate
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni would like to congratulate the winners and participants of the Women and Young entrepreneurs’ awards which took place in Benoni, hosted by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The event aimed to shine a light on women and young entrepreneurs who have been able to succeed in this sector, often overcoming many hurdles and barriers to entry.
From organic Beef tallow to rooftop self-sustainable farming, it is clear that the future of these individuals and the industry is bright. The event highlighted the quantity of untapped potential and opportunities that lie in this sector.
Given Gauteng’s unique position as the economic hub of South Africa and its unique make-up, we believe with the correct support from government, complimented by an appropriate and business friendly regulatory framework, that agriculture and agro-processing could become the new gold rush in Gauteng.
We call on Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mrs. Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, to be true to her word and task her department to deal head-on with issues such as livestock theft, safety, security, and the localisation of procurement of produce directly from farmers and local organisations.
Agriculture and food security plays a crucial role in contributing towards increasing economic growth and job creation.
We call on residents of Ekurhuleni to continue to support our local farmers and entrepreneurs.
