Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni welcomes the Council’s approval for the review of three by-laws, which are to undergo public participation. The approval occurred at the February Ordinary Council in Germiston on the 24th of February 2022.

The three by-laws under review are:

1. The Cemeteries and Crematorium By-Law

Which intends to align the said by-law with current legislation and best practise, to ensure the standardization of application to inter and cremate, to guide and ensure legal compliance, and guide the administration and management of burial and cremation services, as well as officials.

2. The Open Spaces By-Law

To outline what actions are prohibited in Parks and Open Spaces so that the environment is protected for both current and future generations.

3. The Planning, Pruning, Removal and Treatment of Street Trees By-Law

To review guidance to City officials through the entire lifecycle of trees and strengthen the regulation of street trees within the City.

These by-laws are outdated, which necessitates the reviews. As such, the DA calls on all members of the public and all affected parties to provide input in this important process. Adverts will be sent to all councillors to distribute to their respective communities in due course.
