Release: Immediate

Type: Media Statement

The Democratic Alliance Premier Candidate, Solly Msimanga, along with Cllr Michael Waters, visited Pauline Davis Flats recently.

The purpose of the visit was to inspect the non-working lifts, the continuous lack of water pressure which results in the top two floors not having consistent and reliable water and the rodent infestation.

It is unacceptable that elderly and disabled residents must live in these conditions. And the fact that the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) claims that there is no money to address these issues is even more outrageous.

In replies to questions in Council, the CoE claims that the lifts cannot be repaired as well as the much-needed water pump cannot be installed, due to financial constraints. It was on the back of this admission that the DA wrote to the South African Human Rights Commission asking for them to intervene and force the CoE to fulfil its Constitutional obligations and provide basic services to the residents of Pauline Davis flats. In addition, Cllr Waters has provide the DA Premiere Provincial Candidate with a copy of the petition, which will be submitted to COGTA in the Provincial Legislature.

The DA will continue to fight to rescue Ekurhuleni.
