The DA is aware that it is currently the winter season. Shack fires are notorious during this time of year due to the cold dry conditions. Our most vulnerable are exposed to these harsh conditions and we need to ensure that they are informed on ways to prevent such accidents from happening. The trauma that can follow such disasters is enormously difficult to overcome.

We would therefore like to encourage residents to take note of the following measures that can be taken to avoid fire accidents from occurring:

  • Keep a close eye on paraffin stoves, do not leave it unattended.
  • Make sure the stove does not fall over, as it may cause a fire.
  • Don’t cook near a window with a curtain.
  • Keep a close eye on candles, make sure they cannot fall over.
  • Don’t go to sleep with candles and or a stove still burning.
  • Watch out for discarded cigarette butts.
  • Teach children about the dangers of fire and do not leave them unattended with candles or anything that has the potential to cause harm.
  • Be aware of the dangers of illegal and faulty electricity connections, which can also cause fires
  • Keep a bucket handy to fill with water so that you can extinguish flames easily.

In the case of life threatening emergencies please contact: 10177 or 0114580911 and provide the following:

  • Provide the operator with what has happened and what help is needed.
  • Give your full name and contact details.
  • Provide the address (suburb, town, street address) and nearest landmark where the incident is.
  • Wait for the operator to finish assisting before hanging up and make sure you receive a reference number.
