The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni calls on the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to urgently formalise a plan to vaccinate the City’s homeless against Covid-19.

Unfortunately, many of the country’s Metros have failed to accommodate the most marginalised in our communities in their vaccine rollout plan. The exception has been the DA-led City of Cape Town, who, has partnered with a number of homeless shelters to administer vaccines to those who are willing and qualify. As part of the offering, these shelters also assist the homeless in obtaining ID documentation — a requirement in vaccine registration.

The failing ANC and its coalition partners in the CoE, however, has made no such arrangement in ensuring that society’s homeless and vulnerable receive their vaccinations.

Such a plan requires careful consideration and planning, bearing in mind that many of the City’s homeless have no identification documentation, nor do they have online access to be able to register on the EVDS system.

In this regard, the DA calls on all spheres of government to work together with NGO’s and any other relevant stakeholders to coordinate efforts to vaccinate the most vulnerable in our communities.

In the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, no members of society must be left behind.
