Release: Immediate
Type: Media statement
On this final day of Women’s Month, the DA in Ekurhuleni is proud to have participated in the final Walk Against Substance Abuse and Gender-Based Violence, led by the Executive Mayor, Ald. Tania Campbell in Reiger Park.
When the DA marched against the scourge of substance abuse in Reiger Park in 2018; we marched with a message of solidarity and demanded action from the government of the day, and it was not forthcoming.
Today, with recent statistics indicating that Reiger Park remains a hotspot for GBV and substance abuse, we are encouraged to see the Executive Mayor, and members of the Multi-Party Coalition Government, leading the community with a message of action: ‘waging war against these social ills and sharing the City’s preventative and support programmes that have now been made freely available for those in need.’
We acknowledge that the fight to overcome GBV cannot be won in a month. It is a task that will take a concerted effort by united communities, as we work to dismantle the systemic and deeply entrenched norms and traditions that perpetuate violence against women and children.
We reaffirm our commitment to ending the cycles of violence and abuse and we call on all residents to join this year-round effort at home, in the workplace, in schools and in all other spheres of influence, as we work together to build equal, peaceful and supportive communities for all people.
