Date: 29 August 2022
Release: Immediate
Today, the Executive Mayor, Ald. Tanya Campbell and Members of the Mayoral Committee joined the Deputy Minister, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and the Gauteng MEC for Health, Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi along with a team of health practitioners and youth ambassadors in an action march against the illegal termination of pregnancy as part women’s month celebrations in Germiston.
During the march the Dignitaries removed adverts from illegal abortionists, that are unlawfully pasted on municipality infrastructure, inviting women to use their services.
The use of illegal (backdoor) places, that perform unsafe termination procedures under unsafe conditions can lead to complications that affect a woman’s quality of life and well-being. In some cases some women may even experience life-threatening complications.
For too have we stood on the sidelines and have allowed these illegal practices to continue unabated. This includes the illegal placing of posters across our city without the necessary penalties and enforcement of our City’s by-laws and regulations.
We the DA, would like to urge all residents to join hands with the City by taking a stance against illegal abortion practices. We empower you to remove any posters of this kind and trashing it in your nearest waste bin.
Women’s month should not only about fighting against the scourge of GBV but should also focus on promoting the holistic health and well-being of our women.
We will no longer be silent on this matter.
