Release: Immediate

Type: Media Statement

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is saddened by the news of the passing of our beloved friend and former colleague Alderman, Gerrie Kriek, who passed away on Saturday,14th May 2022.

Alderman, Kriek served as a Councillor for over 28 years. What is noteworthy about his political career, is that he has been voted in as a ward councillor at every election spanning from 1988 up until 1992, when he was then elected as the Mayor of the Greater Benoni City Council.

He continued to serve as the Mayor until 1994, during the democratic transition of the country. Thereafter he remained as a councillor and it was during this time that the former Town Councils were amalgamated in the year 2000 into what is now known as the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality — where he continued to serve the remainder of his career as a councillor up until his retirement in 2016.

Alderman, Kriek was conferred an honorary status of Aldermanship by the City in 2016 and continued to live by example until his untimely passing. His personality was larger than life, his firm hand shake and positive smile will be sorely missed along with his love for the community of Benoni where he worked and stayed for over 55 years.

The DA caucus in Ekurhuleni would like to extend our heartfelt and sincere condolences to his beloved family, relatives and friends in these times of sorrow and pain. May the kindness of the Lord bound our gaping wound.

May your soul rest in eternal peace Oom Gerrie Kriek.
