The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ward 38, in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE), is looking forward to the Multi-Party Coalition making greater strides in service delivery, as the new financial year approaches.

Earlier this year, the MMC for Finance, Cllr Fanyana Nkosi tabled the City’s budget, which was centred around the theme of “Back to basics for service delivery and inclusive growth budget” which stemmed from the Executive Mayor, Alderman Tania Campbell’s, State of the City Address, that was delivered earlier this year.

The Multi-Party Coalition has worked hard to do away with vanity projects and financial mismanagement within the City to ensure that the necessary funds are redirected to basic service delivery priorities where it is most needed.

In the new financial year, residents of can look forward to improved service delivery overtime, with the budget placing emphasis on areas that are of most concern, such as the ongoing issues of energy security and dilapidated road infrastructure.

For too long, residents have had to face problems relating to non-functioning streetlights due to the financial mismanagement of the previous administration, coupled with a lack of maintenance that is compounded by the ever increasing amounts of cable theft and vandalism.

As part of the City’s back-to-basics approach to service delivery the Energy Department, has begun identifying certain streetlight sections for refurbishment in the new financial year.

Whilst this is a city-wide issue, the residents can expect to benefit from the considerable portion budgeted for repairs and maintenance, which includes a 90/10 split between the provision for electrical network repairs and that of streetlight repairs.

The Ward’s road infrastructure has been a major concern for residents. Last week the Multi-Party Coalition government launched their action plan on the “War on Potholes” which is a city-wide initiative that will address the current backlog and speed up pothole repairs and road maintenance across the Metro.

With regards to electricity provision in the ward, the DA would like to encourage residents to band together with private security companies and the local community policing forum (CPF) to protect our already ailing electricity infrastructure and community assets against acts of vandalism and theft.
