Cllr. Patricia Mathebula, the Mahlinda family and their home.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Duduza is concerned about the flooding in Bluegum View following the recent torrential rains in the area.

Cllr Patricia Mathebula, DA PR Councillor for the area was called upon to assist the Mahlinda Family in Bluegum View after they found themselves ankle-deep in water due to increased rain in the area. The family currently lives in a small shack that is occupied by two adults (Ages 27 and 31) and four children (Ages 8 months to 12 years old). Members of the family are unemployed and are currently receiving a social relief grant from the government and have no other form of social protection.

The floods caused significant damage to their belongings, leaving the family destitute and in desperate need of assistance. Upon visiting the family, Cllr Mathebula inspected the state of the shack and the family’s living conditions and responded swiftly by requesting assistance from the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services Department (DEMS) and Health and Social Development.

With the help of the Ward Committee Member for Social Development in the area and the MMC of Community Safety, Cllr. Khatutshelo Rasilingwane, Cllr. Mathebula was able to have the area inspected by the DEMS team and assisted the family with food parcels and blankets as a temporal relief measure while the report on the outcomes of the inspection is finalized.

The MMC for Social Development, Cllr. Jennifer Glover has also pledged to assist the family in the interim while the report is finalized. The MMC for Human Settlements, Ald. Alco Ngobese mentioned he will be in touch with the DEMS team once the report is finalized to find a safer and more permanent solution to the family’s housing problem.

As the PR Councillor for the Ward, I would like to thank the DEMS department for their swift action on the situation, as well as the Departments for Community Safety Department, Health and Social Development, and Human Settlements and their respective MMCs, for their continued assistance and efforts.
