Release: Immediate
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni welcomes the recommencement of the long-awaited construction of the Frikkie and Malvina pedestrian bridge in Birchleigh North, Kempton Park.
The bridge’s construction was halted in May 2024 due to budget constraints, but with recommencement of construction, the bridge is expected to be completed by December 2024, marking a significant milestone in improving safety and accessibility for residents.
The DA has been instrumental in ensuring this project comes to fruition. As early as 2017, DA petitions called for an inclusion of the Frikke and Malvina Pedestrian Bridge in the municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
For years, residents of Birchleigh-North have raised concerns about the dangers posed by the lack of adequate pedestrian infrastructure. These were but some of the concerns that were raised during the public participation meetings we spearheaded.
This bridge will provide safer crossing for community members who need to navigate across natural water bodies that have posed great risks during heavy rains.
The people of Ekurhuleni deserve a government that puts their needs first, not one that renders sub-standard services. DA will be closely monitoring this project to ensure its timely completion and to ensure that the City delivers on its promise.
