DA Raises Alarm Over Safety Concerns on Southy Road, Farramere
By Cllr. Mary Goby: City of Ekurhuleni Ward 28 Councillor
Date: 17 January 2025
Release: Immediate
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is deeply concerned about the ongoing safety risks faced by residents of Farramere, Ward 28, particularly those living on the bend of Southy Street, between houses 64 and 72.
This stretch of road has become a hotspot for speeding vehicles, resulting in frequent accidents that put residents’ lives in danger.
The residents of Southy Street have consistently urged the city to take immediate action to address this critical issue, but their requests have been disregarded.
The ANC-EFF run City of Ekurhuleni has failed to take decisive action to mitigate the dangers posed by this hazardous road.
One property has already suffered significant damage, with vehicles crashing through its walls on two separate occasions.
This is a stark reminder of the urgent need for traffic calming measures, such as speed humps and bollards, to prevent further accidents and protect the lives of the residents in the area.
Despite previous applications for traffic calming measures, the city has rejected these proposals without conducting a proper investigation or considering the safety concerns raised by the community.
The DA is committed to ensuring that residents’ concerns are heard, and we will petition the MMC for Roads and Transport, Cllr. Andile Mngwevu, to implement the necessary safety measures on Southy Street.
These measures are not just a matter of convenience; they are a matter of life and death.
The DA will persist in holding the ANC-EFF coalition accountable for their failure to provide quality road infrastructure and effective service delivery to the residents of Ekurhuleni.
