DA sends condolences to families of Ekurhuleni Bus crash victims
by Cllr. Bill Rundle — DA Shadow MMC for Transport Planning in Ekurhuleni
Date: 07 April 2021
Release: Immediate
Type: Media Statement
Two residents were killed by a City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) Bus on Tuesday, 6 April 2021. The bus crashed into the Boksburg Civic Centre and knocked over the two residents.
The bus driver lost control of the municipal vehicle and ran over the women; one a security guard who was assisting to get people into the clinic at the Civic Centre, and the other a clinic patient.
It is alleged that the bus driver was driving at high speed, the brakes of the bus failed, and he lost control of the vehicle.
Reckless driving and speeding by CoE bus drivers are continuously reported to the metro without any actions or consequence management. Furthermore, the vehicle fleet of the metro, including the buses, are poorly maintained and the promised revamp and upgraded service centres have not materialised.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni will request, from the ANC and its coalition partners*, a detailed report on the condition of the bus, the service record of the vehicle and a full-scale investigation of this fatal incident.
As the DA in Ekurhuleni, we wish to pass on our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this sad and trying time.
*ANC Coalition Partners: African Independent Congress (AIC), Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Independent Ratepayers Association of South Africa (IRASA)
