DA tackling Germiston electricity woes head-on

Release: Immediate
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni is tackling the persistent electricity outages experienced by residents of Germiston head-on.
Not a week goes by where large parts of Germiston are without power for hours, if not days-on-end, due to vandalism and theft as well as critical upgrades not having taken place.
These outages have resulted in major losses for both residents and businesses alike.
This dire situation can no longer be accepted by residents as the norm.
As a pro-active party in Council, the DA has taken constructive steps to ensure that residents receive the services they deserve.
Last month, we rejected the ANC-EFF coalition governments plans to increase the service delivery waiting time for electricity outage repairs from two days to seven days.
This outlandish proposal has now been referred to the Executive Mayors office for re-working.
As a result of financial constraints, there is currently a 40 hour per month cap placed on overtime in the Energy Department. Given the number of outages experienced, this cap is reached in a matter of days early on in a new month.
To remedy this, the DA has proposed a shift system which will go a long way to alleviate the dependency on overtime expenditure.
I have submitted questions to Council regarding the level of security at known vandalism hot spots. I am also in constant contact with local security companies and businesses who have offered to support and assist in the fight against power-outages.
I encourage residents to reach out to me with their issues, as well as their proposed solutions.
I want all residents of Ward 39 to know that I am in your corner fighting for you every day to ensure that you receive the services you deserve.
