The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is pleased to announce that a major milestone has been reached towards ensuring a permanent police station in Brackendowns. This follows the outcome of the petition which was submitted by the DA at the start of the 2021–2026 term of office.

In line with the agreement between the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) and, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), the city is in the process of preparing an item that is set to be tabled in council for approval.

Once the council reaches a resolution, this will pave the way for the city to agree to the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the DPWI, the provincial government and the CoE to transfer land parcel Erf 3231 Brackendowns Ext 5, as identified in the DA petition for safety and security service delivery purposes.

The DA is elated at the outcome of the petition which was submitted to parliament on behalf of the residents of Brackenhurst and Brackendowns. More especially where this will mean finger-pointing between national government and local government will come to an end.

For far too long, DPWI has distanced itself from taking responsibility for basic maintenance at the police station, which meant the dilapidated station has been neglected for a number of years.

Furthermore, the DA also welcomes the city’s action to demolish the burned building near the police station which has been an eyesore for several years. This too came as a result of the DA’s constant pressure to ensure responsible stakeholders take responsibility for their part in ensuring the property is kept as tidy as possible.

With this victory, as the DA, we believe that the relentless fight to keep the community safe has been given a major boost as a result of a petition we have submitted on behalf of Ward 38 residents.

The DA will continue to fight for the rights of residents to live in a safe environment where police officers are given the tools to adequately do their work.
