The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has voted against the appointment of the Environmental resources and waste management Head of Department in the city. We have long been calling for ‘fit for purpose’ over cadre deployment in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).

Residents, communities and businesses continue to suffer poor levels of service delivery, while politically connected members of the governing ANC and its coalition partners occupy critical posts, but fail to deliver.

We have been fighting for the filling of this vacant post because we believe that this position will drive overall optimisation of the Environmental management and Waste management departmental value chain. However, we do not agree with the preferred candidate due to serious allegations of gross-misconduct.

The HR Department embarked on a fact-finding process to establish reasons for the disciplinary proceedings or suspension of the recommended candidate at her previous position in the City of eThekwini.

Indeed, the concerns raised by the Democratic Alliance was validated when the Candidate provided an unsworn but signed statement, where she confirmed that she was suspended from her employment on 01 August 2023.

We have been requesting that due processes must be followed, ensuring the best candidate will be selected, rather than the politically connected. The ANC and its coalition partners in CoE have a history of appointing connected cadres to top jobs in the city, only for these officials to be removed a few years later, due to corruption, mismanagement and the lack of qualifications — all exposed by the DA.

The DA was instrumental in identifying these issues and driving them in council, as we cannot allow cadre deployment to thrive, while our city collapses and residents, communities and businesses bear the brunt of these poor political decisions.

This is the exact reason why the DA is calling for an inclusive selection panel that has the mandate of service delivery at its core, rather than political favors.
