The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ward 38, welcomes the intervention by MMC for Waste and Environmental Services, Cllr Brandon Pretorius in acquiring 36 vehicles as part of an effort to turn around waste management in the city.
With regular waste collection having decreased significantly due to fleet issues in Alberton and other parts of the city, the approval of the plant hire contract will assist in getting waste collection back on track in the City. The first hired plant equipment was received by the Executive Mayor, Ald. Tania Campbell and the MMC Pretorius on the 27th of February 2023, at the Alberton Depot, situated at the Swartkoppies Complex, corner Swartkoppies Road and Nelson Mandela Avenue.
Now that the much-needed adjustment budget has been approved by Council, the City will be in a position to purchase waste compactors outright to replace our aging in-house fleet. This will be supplemented by the hired plant equipment so that waste backlogs become an issue of the past. The R21 700 000 allocated to the Waste Department’s budget will go a long way in fixing, maintaining, and expanding the City’s fleet.
Other key service delivery enhancements will also include, amongst others, the fixing of potholes, streetlight repairs, grass cutting, and the cleaning of parks and cemeteries.
Unfortunately, the ANC, EFF, IRASA, and minority parties chose to put their narrow interests ahead of residents by delaying the approval of the adjustment budget and the roll-out of service delivery by more than a month.
We are however confident that the executive leadership and administration of the City will work hard to ensure the backlog in service delivery is cleared. Despite petty politics standing in the way of delivery, the DA MMC has shown that indeed the DA can get things done by looking at alternative solutions to ensure that service delivery occurs unabated, even under very hostile and unpredictable political conditions.
The corruption and mismanagement of departments by the ANC government over the past decade have caused people to be without access to adequate housing, water, electricity, and sanitation.
We are aware that our residents are frustrated by the slow and inefficient delivery of basic services. It is therefore why we have committed ourselves to turning this around for the betterment of our city and its inhabitants.
The DA remains committed to ensuring that all residents receive quality service delivery and will remain firm in its resolve to ensure a responsive, stable, and accountable government that delivers.
