Date: 10 July 2022

Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Metro Police Department welcomed the 470 new EMPD officers who have recently completed their training at the police training academy in Kwa-Thema.

This new intake will see the EMPD force standing at 2923 officers whose addition will further empower the EMPD and enable them to better police the City’s communities.

Although policing is a national competency, the City itself has a role to play in keeping residents safe. The capacitation of the Metro’s police force will go a long way in improving its crime prevention initiatives, traffic policing and by-law enforcement.

The passing out parade falls directly in line with the DA Ekurhuleni’s 2021- 2026 local government manifesto which speaks to the improving of visible policing and response times by increasing the number of EMPD officers, creating civilian policing units, and establishing mobile police stations where people do not have access to community safety services. The DA firmly believes that visible and active policing will assist in deterring potential criminals from committing crimes and ensure that those who commit crimes are caught and punished.

We welcome the strides made by the Multi-Party Coalition Government to fight crime and lawlessness in the City.

Increased police presence and visibility are crucial for maintaining law and order and the rule of law.
