Joint Statement by Cllr. Khathutshelo Rasilingwane — DA Party Whip of the Health and Social Development Oversight Committee in Ekurhuleni; and Cllr. Mike da Silva — DA PR Councillor in Ekurhuleni

Date: 19 July 2022

Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni welcomes the commitment made by the Gauteng Department of Health, on plans to extend the Daveyton Main Clinic.

This information was revealed by the Gauteng Department of Health in a written reply to the DA’s questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) regarding the City of Ekurhuleni’s clinics.

These questions were posed to the Department following an unannounced oversight visit to Daveyton Main clinic by Cllr Khathutshelo Rasilingwane and Cllr Mike da Silva on the 23rd of March 2022. The visit was conducted following numerous complaints from residents about the services provided at the clinic.

The unannounced site visit revealed challenges such as a lack of adequate operating space, a lack of maintenance of building infrastructure, and delays in the filling of critical vacant funded positions in the clinic.

In the response to the issue of space, the department revealed that it has identified an open space next to the clinic that belongs to the municipality, to which the district has been granted the permission to take up occupation.

Regarding the filling of vacant positions, the department responded that it takes between 2–3 months to fill the position. However, if an appointment is made in terms of a transfer from another institution, the individual is allowed to serve 30 days’ notice and if a individual is unemployed, the process will conclude with an immediate appointment of this individual.

The project to extend the clinic is estimated to commence in the year 2023/2024, depending on the availability of funds. Consultants have been appointed while the business plan to convert the Daveyton Main Clinic into a Community Healthcare Centre (CHC) is being finalized.
