Release: Immediate
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ward 38 welcomes the progress report from the Petitions Office regarding a petition submitted on behalf of residents in 2020 to improve sewer infrastructure in Ward 38.
The petition sought to implore the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to urgently allocate funds to address the sewer infrastructure challenges.
Responding to the issue raised in the petition, the Water and Sanitation Department indicated that they had appointed consultants to investigate the capacity of sewer pipelines in Brackenhurst and Brackendowns.
Through this, the department was able to advise on areas which needed to be upgraded.
In Brackenhurst, Geranium Street was identified, while in Brackendowns, Sycamore Road, Bosvier Road, Marie Street, Vaal Road, and Palala Street have been identified as areas that require upgrading.
While the DA is pleased that the first two stages, investigation and design are now complete, and the third, design stage, is expected to be completed by the end of September 2024, it is disappointing that the progress report has taken years to reach the petitioners.
Equally, while the City has indicated that a budget of R75 million has been budgeted for the next three years, the DA believes that the City should have responded to the petition within 30 days and included the budget allocation in the response.
The DA will request a detailed breakdown, including design plans, of the R30 million budgeted for these upgrades in the current financial year.
The DA remains committed to ensuring the sewer system is upgraded, and that there is an improvement in service delivery for residents of Ward 38.
