Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The much needed training of officials came into effect after the Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni, started placing pressure on the Human Settlements Department in the previous term, to have officials trained and well equipped to be able to efficiently assist residents with housing registrations.

These newly trained officials, who are based in each region, will allow residents the ease of registering for housing, without the hassle of traveling from all corners of the 112 wards, to the Gauteng Provincial Housing Office based in Alberton.

We would like to take this opportunity to encourage residents to make use of the regional offices nearest to them to register on the Housing Subsidy System(HSS) as well as the National Housing Needs Register (NHNR) by the Human Settlements Department.

Please see below details on where to register by Region:

  • Southern Region:

Alberton Civic Centre, Alwyn Taljaard Ave, 7th Floor, Alberton

  • Eastern Region:

Benoni Customer Centre, corner Elston and Tom Jones Street, Benoni

  • Northern Region: Kempton Park Civic Centre, corner Pretoria and C.R. Swart Road, Kempton Park.

Please see below criteria for qualification for both HSS and NHNR:

· Be a South African citizen.

· Have permanent residential status in respect of foreign nationals.

· Be over the age of 18 years’ old.

· Individual or joint household monthly income should not exceed R3500 in the case of RDP houses.

· Individual or joint household monthly income should not exceed R 22 000 in the case of the credit linked or finance linked individual subsidy programme and rapid land release programme.

· Have financial dependents.

· Must have never owned a house before.

Further residents with the old Form C (those who applied in 1996) should visit these offices to update their details on the system as this will help them when housing opportunities are available, they will not be left out.

Elderly people who are 60 years and above can also register for City of Ekurhuleni Old Age Homes rental. The main criteria being that they should not own any property of their own, have a clear credit record and please take note that there is a three (3) year waiting period, so the sooner you register the earlier you can benefit.

As the DA we will make sure that in this current term we stem out housing corruption and therefore ask residents to report the corruption to City of Ekurhuleni Hotline 0800 102 201 or their local Councillors or send me a email to Sinethemba.Matiwane@ekurhuleni.gov.za
