DAWN KwaTsaDuza takes a stand against GBV
By- Cllr. Patricia Mathebula DAWN Constituency Representative for KwaTsaDuza
Date: 21 August 2024
Release: Immediate
Members of the Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) branch in KwaTsaDuza picketed outside the Duduza South African Police Services (SAPS) offices in solidarity with victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
GBV has reached epidemic proportions in our society. Our message is clear, we will no longer see our human rights disregarded.
The purpose of the picket was to stand in solidarity with residents of KwaTsaDuza and to highlight that the SAPS are there to support and aid them as the enforcers of the law.
We are encouraged and strengthened in the knowledge that our organisation is home to strong, capable women, represented at every level of government, who are not afraid to fight for women in our society.
DA Gauteng provincial spokesperson on social development, Refiloe Nt’sekhe MPL, has worked tirelessly to ensure that the Gauteng Department of Social Development pay Non-Governmental and Non-Profit Organizations their funds to ensure they can carry on improving the lives of the forgotten and marginalized.
Without these institutions, victims of GBV would be without crucial support such as victim friendly rooms, trauma councillors or places of safety to reside when they have nowhere else to go.
During Women’s month we need to reflect on the importance of women as the builders of our society.
The very fabric of families and communities is woven by women who play critical roles in the economy — from our brightest CEOs to carers, nurses, doctors, teachers, business owners, builders, and traders, all working hard to provide for their families.
The DA is proud to have activists that heed the call to protect and stand up for the vulnerable every day. Our activism is not borne of sloganeering but is rooted in our empathetic approach to the issues that adversely impact society.
Better communities are a collective responsibility, it is not only up to state institutions, but it is up to all of us to do our part.
The DA will continue to fight the scourge of GBV to build a safe, inclusive society.
