Ekurhuleni dragging its feet over Lindelani housing project
Statement by Cllr. Khathutshelo Rasilingwane — DA Shadow MMC for Health & Social Development in Ekurhuleni
Date: 12 August 2021
Release: Immediate
Type: Media statement
The ANC-led City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has once again let down the residents of Lindelani after failing to honour their commitment to providing houses to the community.
Of the 1639 houses that were promised to be built by the ANC and its coalition partners administration by the end of the 2020/2021 Financial Year, MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr. Lesiba Mpya, revealed that only 450 have materialised in phase one of the project — a mere 27%.
According to Parliamentary replies, the then Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, MP Lindiwe Sisulu, dated 4 June 2021, stated that the first batch of 150 houses commenced on the 8th of June 2021. The remaining houses would, thereafter, be completed by the 30th of June 2021.
Unfortunately, these remaining houses remain to be seen, while the 450 houses constructed to date, most have yet to be finished with only 100 residents taking ownership of their new house.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni recognises the urgent need for housing in the City, especially for those who reside in informal settlements. The Party thereby urges the ANC-led CoE to urgently address the housing shortage and fully commit to delivering the houses that are so desperately needed in our communities.
The DA will continue to monitor the progress of the Lindelani housing project and ensure that the Department of Human Settlements and MMC Mpya are held to account in delivering these houses to the residents of Lindelani.
