Ekurhuleni Faces Urgent Need for Adequate Bridge Height Signage

Date: 20 November 2024
Release: Immediate
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is concerned about the ongoing absence of adequate bridge height signage across the city.
This road infrastructure issue continues to pose a great risk to both residents and the environment, with preventable accidents destroying infrastructure and, tragically, leading to an increase in fatalities.
We have raised this matter numerous times to the relevant departments with hope of getting the issue resolved.
At the recent council meeting, I posed questions to the MMC for Roads and Transport Planning, Cllr. Andile Mngwevu about the absence of proper height signage on Ekurhuleni’s bridges.
In response, the MMC committed to completing an audit of visible height signage by the end of December 2024. While this is a step in the right direction, it is simply not enough.
The ANC-EFF Coalition must expedite this audit and take immediate, decisive action to improve the quality our roads ensure the safety of residents and infrastructure.
The time for further delays has expired. We cannot continue to ignore the dangers posed by inadequate signage. A good road management policy must be established and adopted to ensure that roads are regularly and appropriately assessed.
The DA will continue to hold the municipality accountable and push for prioritization of public safety and the protection of our environment. We will not rest until this critical issue is addressed and resolved.
