Ekurhuleni leaves Ward 92 residents high and dry

After years of persistent water outages due to dilapidated and failing infrastructure, residents of Ward 92 are no closer to being provided with a feasible solution by the City of Ekurhuleni.

Under the DA-led coalition government, budget was allocated to repair the Korhaan water tower in Sunnyridge, as well as the construction of an additional mega water tower. The coalition also provisioned to purchase land to build an additional water reservoir.

When the DA-led coalition was removed from office, the ANC-EFF doomsday coalition removed budget from the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) dashing the hopes of residents.

Ward 92 is made up of numerous high-lying areas, many of which can go days without water as the Korhaan water tower, which is riddled with leaks, is on the verge of collapse.

In response to questions posed to the MMC for Water and Sanitation, Cllr Thembi Msane, it was revealed that the City keeps the tower at a 40% capacity due to the number of leaks.

Despite its visible decline, the department has indicated that the tower is not in a perilous state.

Asked why the budget was removed from the IDP given the severity of the issue, the MMC would not provide an answer.

To save face, MMC Msane stated that the Korhaan water tower would be rebuilt in the next financial year.

It is unacceptable that a situation as dire as the one faced by residents of Ward 92 is treated in the off-handed manner as it has been by the ANC-EFF coalition.

Given the city’s poor track record of infrastructure investment, I will endeavour hold the MMC to her word to ensure that residents have access to adequate water supply by making certain this project is reflected on the IDP.
