Release: Immediate

Residents of Highway Gardens, Ward 92, already swamped by excessive billboards facing the R24 highway, are up in arms over an illegally constructed billboard which poses a safety risk to both motorists and pedestrians.

Spanning the length of the corner of Minuach and Partridge Avenue, an illegal, steel-framed billboard was put up without approval from the City of Ekurhuleni’s Outdoor Advertising Department.

Residents of Highway Gardens have not only reported the structure to the City but have approached me to assist in ensuring that this matter is dealt with timeously.

Not only is it an eyesore, but it is poorly built and likely to collapse.

DA Shadow MMC for City Planning, Ald. Heather Hart and I have engaged with the property owner over the structure and advertising. In response the owner has pleaded ignorance, stating that they were unaware of the need to submit applications to the city.

I have approached the City Planning Outdoor Advertising Department to step in and deal with this matter.

They have indicated that they were unaware of this billboard and that it is not legal. To this end they have issued a notice to the property owner.

I will continue to ensure that this matter is given the urgency it deserves and will continue to fight for the residents of Highway Gardens.
