The illegal dumping that is occurring in Actonville, Ekurhuleni, is proving to be a massive health crisis for residents of the community. They have not had their waste bins collected by the Waste Department, mainly due to a massive waste collection backlog due to the non-payment of third party contractors.

Residents, on a daily basis, have to manoeuvre their way through rodent-infested piles of garbage that line pavements and walkways all through the ANC-run community, which are proving to be a major health crisis.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni have sent numerous requests to the Department of Waste, specifically to the HOD, Faith Wotshela, to immediately rectify the situation. These requests, however, have been ignored as trash continues to pile up in the community at an alarming rate.

This lack of service delivery is not uncommon under the ANC Coalition-led Metro, with waste collection non-existent in many communities across Ekurhuleni. The lack of these mandated services led the DA to launch a Motion of No Confidence in the MMC for Environment & Waste Management, Ald. Khosi Mabaso, at the January 2021 Ordinary Council meeting.

While the motion was ultimately dismissed, it highlights the extent of the Department’s unacceptable performance in providing the desperately needed services to communities across the City, with Actonville as no exception.

The DA finds this unacceptable and will continue working hard to keep the ANC Coalition-led City accountable in ensuring that Actonville residents receive the services they deserve.
