Incomplete BRT Project a Safety Risk for Motorists

The Democratic Alliance in the City of Ekurhuleni has raised concerns over the ongoing BRT Project which remains incompleted due to the non-payment of contractors assisting with the project.

The area of concern is the intersection of CR Swart and Green avenue, where while the project has been completed, the lack of road markings, and non-operational street lights poses a serious concern for motorists. Furthermore, there are no Traffic lights installed as the contract to replace the traffic lights are still awaiting the approval process.

As the councillor I am inundated with complaints regarding the safety on this road, I have requested the project manager urgently assist with road signs and flashing lights to warn motorists that the road narrows and there is a potentially dangerous intersection.

The unsafe road conditions have led to several serious accidents and the DA calls for immediate interventions that should be implemented to improve the safety aspect by adequately marking the area with warning signs, road markings and where possible flashing beacons/warning lights during the evenings. The main objective remains for the project to be completed as projected and not cause or accept any further delays due to the continued incompetence and mismanagement of a basic road project by the CoE and it’s appointed service providers.

The project should have been completed in June 2023, EFF Chairperson and MMC for finance Cllr Dunga and his coalition partners stated in an extraordinary Council meeting on the 17th October that the COE municipality is not in a financial crisis -this leaves the question as to why are they not paying their contractors and completing projects.
