Infrastructure- Ekurhuleni, the Pothole City

Release: Immediate
The DA is highly disappointed in the performance of the ANC coalition-led Roads and Storm Water Department. It is clear this Department has failed to meet its mandate to properly plan and manage regular maintenance of the City’s roads and storm water systems resulting in many roads being riddled with potholes and damaged due to overflowing storm water systems posing a safety hazard for commuters and pedestrians alike.
The ANC-led coalition* would like residents to believe, that the condition of our roads is a result of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, however, the deterioration of our municipal infrastructure can be tracked well before the outbreak of the pandemic. The Department is now solely running on crisis management mode with very little budget remaining to fix the enormous problem facing the City’s roads.
Under a DA-led administration, the municipal infrastructure would never be allowed to deteriorate to this extent. Getting the basics right, is the first order of business under a DA-run government. A well-run, safe and clean city are important requirements for attracting investment in a City.
A DA-run Ekurhuleni will:
· Ensure that sufficient budget is allocated for basic service delivery and the maintenance of municipal infrastructure;
· Fix potholes and maintain all municipal roads;
· Audit, repair and replace all streetlights and road signage;
· Prioritise the regular maintenance and refurbishment of municipal infrastructure.
