Following questions to council, the Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni can confirm that the city, under the EFF/ANC coalition are only planning to budget to upgrade the Kempton Park swimming pool in the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 budget.
This information came following questions posed to council, where it was reveals that an inspection of the pool was undertaken in 2019 and a report highlighted an estimated cost of R13,969,970–70.
The upgrading of the swimming pool will be a 16 month project. The department plans to spend R6 Million in the 2024/2025 budget and R6,5 million in the 2025/2026 budget.
The upgrade will consist of the following:
- Main Pool and Kiddies Pool -There is structural cracks in Both the main pool and kiddies pool that require major remedial work since both pool is losing a lot of water
- Removal of Pool tiles, inspection for leaks and retiling
- Upgrade of pumproom and or Filtration system
- Upgrade of Chlorine room
- Construction of a roof above bathrooms and change rooms
- Refurbishment of the Clubhouse
- Upgrade of the DB Board
- Ceiling Partitions and flooring
- Contraction of new storage Structures
- Major upgrade to the Lifeguard booth and
- Upgrade of the new clubhouse and lounge
Unfortunately, residents are paying the price for 25 years of no maintenance of the swimming. The swimming pool can not be use due to the Structural crack and become a illegal dumping area.
The DA strongly believes that the city has a duty to provide recreational areas for all to enjoy. This is why the upgrading of the Kempton Park is a Ward Priority for Ward 16!
