Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The Democratic Alliance in the City of Ekurhuleni filed an urgent motion to the EFF Speaker of Council requesting an urgent debate on the energy crisis faced by businesses and residents in the City of Ekurhuleni.

The EFF Speaker of Council, Cllr. Nthabiseng Tshivhenga indicated that the energy crisis currently plaguing the city is not urgent and does not warrant an urgent debate. Instead, stating that this matter could be adequately dealt with in the Water, Energy and Sanitation Oversight.

The DA believes that the power outages are now reaching crisis level and if this matter could indeed have been adequately dealt with in relevant oversight, we would not be in this crisis!

The so-called people’s government has ignored the people’s cry for intervention and leadership. The DA has heard the voice of the people and will continue to fight for their rights. We have escalated this matter to the Human Rights Commission and the Public Protector.

The DA will not allow the corrupt ANC/EFF-led coalition to undermine the rights of people and businesses. Jobs and livelihoods are at stake and we will do everything in our power to protect them.
