Lindelani suffers over lack of waste collection

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni is shocked to learn that the community of Lindelani has been without waste collection for several months. Even though the issue was reported to the DA by frustrated residents last year, the community is yet to see any action taken by the ANC Coalition-led* Metro to remedy the situation — which has now become a full-on health hazard.

Following a statement released by the DA to the media last year, the Department of Waste Spokesperson disingenuously claimed that Lindelani was receiving waste collection services as scheduled. Residents, however, told a different story as waste continues to pile up unabated in the community as residents have to roads filled with garbage and stench.

The ANC Coalition-led City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has been battling a self-inflicted waste crisis for several months. The closure of a number of the Metro’s landfill sites due to contractual mismanagement by the Department, as well as many waste collection and processing vehicles standing dormant due to the City’s Fleet Management Department running out of money, means that there are massive waste backlogs throughout the City. Lindelani is no exception.

Despite, these service deliveries failures, the Metro hasn’t even bothered to communicate to Lindelani residents given the situation, leaving them unsure of why the waste collection has come to a grinding halt.

The DA in Ekurhuleni finds this completely unacceptable and will not stop holding the uncaring ANC-led administration to account until services are delivered to residents of Lindelani who have to endure unhealthy and undignified conditions daily.
