The Mayfield Cemetery is in a decrepit state and is sliding into further disrepair as the ANC-led coalition* in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) continues to ignore residents’ pleas to perform much-needed maintenance to the facility.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni exposed the poor state of the cemetery back in February 2020 in an attempt to compel the CoE to conduct maintenance on the site, which contained vandalised tombstones, broken-down fences, overgrown grass and extensive illegal dumping.

Disappointingly, there has been little to no maintenance or repair to the cemetery meaning that it is now in a worse state than before. The broken-down fencing means that the site has become a thoroughfare for commuters, which has attracted various hawkers and traders. In addition, livestock is regularly seen grazing on the premises gaining access through the non-existent fence.

The lack of grass cutting and lack of security also means that the cemetery is open for criminal opportunism, thereby placing those visiting deceased loved ones at risk.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, maintenance by the ANC-led administration, has been woefully inadequate across the Metro. While our communities continue to be ravaged under the third wave of the virus, spaces like cemeteries are important in providing residents with a dignified place of solace when mourning their loved ones. Unfortunately, the Metro has allowed the cemetery to be left to rack and ruin.

The DA will continue to put pressure on the Department of Environmental Resource and Waste Management Services by asking official questions in Council of when maintenance of the facility will be performed. In addition, the Party will be launching a petition on behalf of residents calling on the Metro to urgently conduct maintenance and repairs to the cemetery.
