The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has slammed the state over the state of the N17 pedestrian overpass bridge which is seemingly on the brink of collapse.
The DA undertook a site to the bridge which has been reported to SANRAL and is in urgent repairs.
In June last year, SANRAL committed to repair the bridge which was initially constructed in 1983 and has a lifespan of at least 50 years — on condition that preventative and routine maintenance is carried out as and when required.
Currently, parts of the bridge are cracked and sections of the bridge have shifted apart. This causes a serious safety concern for pedestrians who use the bridge to safely cross the busy highway. As the DA, we call on SANRAL to urgently undertake the necessary maintenance of the bridge.
