Release: Immediate

Type: Media statement

The Democratic Alliance in the City of Ekurhuleni has raised serious concerns over the non-operation Jojo tanks at the Chris Hani Clinic, Villa Lisa in Ward 45, for over a year.

As the DA, we have reported this matter to the City’s Real Estate Department calling on them to immediately repair these crucial tanks. These Jojo tanks serve as a vital source of water to the clinic should there be any unplanned water outages or repairs to water infrastructure in the area. This now results in the clinic being closed because, without a proper alternative water source, the staff and community cannot use the bathrooms or toilets.

The closure of the clinic forces communities to travel to the Dawn Park clinic over 3km away, where they are forced to stand in long queues once again.

As the Democratic Alliance in the City of Ekurhuleni, we urge the Real Estate Department to expedite this matter and repair the Jojo tanks or arrange for temporary Jojo tanks to assist clinic staff and communities of Ward 45 and Ward 99 using this facility.

Access to health care is a fundamental human right enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the DA will continuously fight for the rights of the communities of this city which are being marginalised by the uncaring EFF-led coalition.
