Release: Immediate

Type: Media Statement

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni is concerned over the current state of old age homes in Ward 75.

Five of the seven old age homes are municipal-run, and are home to almost 350 elderly residents. Sadly, the conditions continue to deteriorate with a spiralling maintenance back log and unkept grass.

On a daily basis, I receive calls regarding sewerage issues, water leaks and general maintenance complaints. In addition, fire extinguishers and hoses were last serviced almost ten years ago.

Due to the lack of maintenance several units remain empty and in a state of disrepair, awaiting maintenance work. This, while the list of elderly people needing access to these homes grows.

As the DA, we will be monitoring the new budget and encourage residents to make inputs to ensure better service delivery in their communities.
