Power outages in Brentwood Park causing havoc

The frequent power outages experienced by the community of Brentwood Park, Pomona, are causing massive disruptions for residents and businesses alike.
The areas have been with intermittent power since the beginning of February 2021, with major outages occurring on the 4th, 6th, 10th, 11th and the 13th, affecting some 3000 residents and businesses.
The length of these outages has varied between 6 and 36 hours creating great hardship and discomfort for residents, with many losing perishable food items and others losing their jobs as businesses lose income as a result of an unsustainable and inconsistent energy supply.
The power outages are a result of the perennial cable theft and the vandalism of property with the ANC Coalition-led City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) doing little to secure the energy infrastructure in the area. It is also evident that poorly maintained electricity infrastructure and power lines have become a major contributing factor to power outages in the ANC Coalition-led CoE with very little political will to rectify the situation.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni has escalated the issue to the MMC for Water, Sanitation & Energy, Cllr. Tiisetso Nketle, as well as the City Manager, Dr. Imogen Mashazi. After a recent meeting with the DA, the MMC has agreed to increase security and EMPD presence around the energy infrastructure in the community and to improve reaction and communication.
The DA will continue to hold the ANC Coalition-led CoE to account, and ensure that the residents of Brentwood Park receive the services they sorely need.
